What started as a series of discussions about caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's has evolved into a weekly parish activity. Each Wednesday evening, caregivers gather at Sacred Heart Parish Center to share the joys and challenges of their week. These women and men bring a variety of experience to our discussions; some are new to Alzheimer's, and others bring years of first-hand knowledge of this disease to the table. All are committed to learning about dementia, its impact on their loved one, their family, and us as caregivers.
Together With Alzheimer's provides a safe place for caregivers to speak candidly about the complexities of our roles and responsibilities. We draw from others' experiences and insights and apply them to our situations. Once a month we host a speaker to discuss topics such as strategies and techniques to help manage dementia and ways in which to sustain our own well being. Together, we learn about support that is available within the community: home health; respite care; day programs; and other opportunities for socialization.
Once strangers, members of our group have become friends. Together with our loved ones with dementia, we volunteer at the church and participate in church socials. Camaraderie, sharing, learning, and laughter help diminish the isolation that insinuates itself into our roles as caregivers.
Join us and see how good it feels to know you are not alone: All are welcome in the Parish Center of Sacred Heart Church, 326 Main St, Yarmouth.
